Cobbler Creek Recreation Park and the nature play space at Morialta Conservation Park have been recognised in the SA/NT section of Parks and Leisure Australia’s 2018 Awards of Excellence.

Cobbler Creek at Salisbury East was named Park of the Year for a $1 million upgrade of visitor facilities, while Morialta took out the award for best play space over $500,000.

Department for Environment and Water Acting Group Executive Director Parks and Regions Grant Pelton said the park upgrades were part of a $10.4 million State Government project to connect residents of the north and south of Adelaide with nature.

“New visitor facilities at Cobbler Creek included the Kites and Kestrels nature play space, mountain biking trails, toilets, barbecue and picnic facilities, and a carpark,” he said.

Mr Pelton said the $900,000 Mukanthi nature play space at Morialta Conservation Park had also been a tremendous success with families from across Adelaide.

“Mukanthi means ‘Celebrate and play’ in the Kaurna language,” he said.

“The play space was designed and built by local companies Climbing Tree and Peter Semple Landscape Architects, and it was a huge undertaking, covering an area almost as big as Adelaide Oval.

“There are five areas for kids to explore and discover, with a giant slide and climbing tower at Eagle’s Nest, lower climbing towers for younger children at the Kookaburra Nests, and the maze-like Great Snake.

“There are also the Climbing Boulders to help children and adults build their climbing skills, and Frog Island, which is in a natural creek setting and features Kaurna cultural elements such as a fire pit and canoe.

“Like Cobbler Creek, the public reaction has been incredible and visitor numbers have skyrocketed since the play space opened in September 2017.”

The park developments were the result of an extensive engagement process that asked the community what facilities they would like to see in their local national parks.

The two parks will now compete at Parks and Leisure Australia’s National Awards of Excellence, with the winners to be announced in Melbourne on 16 October.
