And now for some good news!
After three nights of sleeping rough in dense scrub on Qld’s Fraser Island, an elderly woman has walked onto a beach for an emotional reunion with her family and to tell her tale of survival.
Authorities said they never gave up hope but expressed their relief on Sunday as Madeleine Nowak, 73, was found alive and well following an extensive search and rescue mission.
Ms Nowak enjoyed an emotional embrace with her husband on Sunday morning after being reported missing on Thursday.
news.com.au reports their reunion was captured by photographers, and Queensland Police described it as a touching moment after a difficult and draining search and rescue effort.
“Police on the island said it was extremely emotional and everybody involved in the search effort was just so relieved,” Acting Inspector Brooke Flood said.
“It’s been a really, really long three days. The work of the SES during the line searches was just amazing.
“The whole community has played a part in this. We’ve had volunteers from all across the Wide Bay district.
“The work’s been outstanding and that’s what’s led to this fantastic result.”
