Celebrate spring at Onkaparinga River NP and Onkaparinga River Recreation Park as the wildflowers burst into bloom with a range of events at Parks SA's Park of the Month for September.

National Parks South Australia Senior Ranger Visitor Services Sean Benz is enthusiastic about the Park of the Month activities and hopes to welcome many new visitors to Onkaparinga following the recent $1.7 million upgrade.

The improvements include a lookout above the Punchbowl waterhole, new campground, kayak launch, toilet facilities, car parks, improved signage and trails making the park more family-friendly, accessible and easier to navigate for walkers, cyclists and horse riders.

“There are many exciting experiences planned throughout the month including a number of guided bushwalks. The Friends of Heysen Trail group will host a walk with impressive views of the Onkaparinga Gorge and an opportunity to spot native orchids along the way.

“You can bring along a picnic lunch or attend the Friends of Onkaparinga Park fundraising barbeque. Then join the park rangers and local volunteers to explore the stunning new trails and spectacular Punchbowl lookout or attend the Willunga Basin Trail group hike,” Mr Benz said.

“We are also offering kayaking sessions along the Onkaparinga River from our new kayak launch and family-friendly adventure and abseiling sessions at the Gorge with qualified climbing instructors,” Mr Benz said.

With the weather warming up, it’s a great time to gather friends and family and stay at the new Pink Gum campground within the park. Set in a secluded spot near the Onkaparinga River, the camping area accommodates 11 campsites and caters for tents, caravans and motorhomes.
