New trails and campsites planned for NT's Kings Canyon
Including a new 32km multi-day loop trail
A major expansion of walking infrastructure is planned for one of NT’s best-known tourism spots, with a new 32km multi-day loop trail, three campsites and an additional walking connection proposed for Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park.
The new loop trail will connect with the existing Giles Track and is planned to be walked in a clockwise direction, giving visitors a new way to explore the spectacular landscapes around Kings Canyon.
Three new remote campsites are also proposed along the route, each designed to accommodate up to 20 walkers. The campsites are expected to include raised sleeping platforms, rainwater tanks, toilets, tables and benches, as well as areas suitable for helicopter landings.
The project also includes an 8km walking trail linking Kings Canyon Resort with the Kings Canyon National Park car park. The new connection would provide walkers with another way to access the park without relying solely on vehicles.
Another significant element is a proposed viewing platform overlooking a sacred site. The platform is intended to allow visitors to see the site while protecting it from direct access, with entry to the sacred area remaining restricted.
The 32km trail is expected to involve stonework and some light-to-medium vegetation clearing. The project has reportedly been in development for about two years, with NT-based company Tricky Tracks involved in planning and mapping the proposed route.
A $2 million provisional sum has been allocated towards the trail works, while the Central Land Council has approved a corridor for the new trail. Further consultation with Traditional Owners through the Watarrka Joint Management Group will also be required.
The tender process includes requirements for environmental planning and an Indigenous Development Plan, including opportunities for local employment.
The current tender closes on 5 October 2026, with construction dependent on the outcome of the process and subsequent approvals.
