With Mother's Day happening on Sunday, Great Walks spoke to one daughter about her mum's inspiring effort on the Oxfam Trailwalker.

Rebecca Edwards shares the proud moment of her mum crossing the finish line at Oxfam Trailwalker after sadly retiring with just 20km to go in the previous year:

“My mum Barbara, who is nearly 60, took on Oxfam Trailwalker with me last year but she sadly had to retire after about 78km due to injury. She was devastated. But she picked herself up and we decided to take on the 2019 Oxfam Trailwalker together.

With her daughters and grandchildren cheering her on she made it! I’m so proud of my mum. We may have been in the last 50 teams to cross the finish line but she walked 100km in 35.5hr with no sleep. One powerful lady!”

Mum did her first Oxfam Trailwalker in 2018 with her running group. We were one of five groups to do it with her running group. Mum had just completed a half marathon and wanted a new goal to work towards but sadly had to retire.

This year she was inspired to complete Oxfam Trailwalker out of pure vengeance! She was devastated, so doing Oxfam Trailwalker again was not a question but a must. The opportunity to raise money for less fortunate communities for another year was also a key driver.

Mum and the team wouldn’t have completed Oxfam Trailwalker without the support from our family. My sisters were the support crew who met her every needs, attending to her physically and emotionally.

We also arranged for some of mum’s running crew to visit her at the check points for moral support and give her that little boost of energy. Her grandchildren also walked a little with her to cheer her on, but the best part was seeing all the support come together at the finish line.

Oxfam Trailwalker has brought my mum and me closer. We laughed together, sang together and definitely cried together (especially across the finish line). We worked together to be each other’s rock for both events and it was great to share it with my two other sisters.”
