The US town of Steamboat Springs in northern Colorado has re-purposed parking meters into donation stations at trailheads around town.
The ski resort town installed 10 of the machines on trails to allow hikers and bikers on nonmotorised trails to donate to trail maintenance on the spot.
The credit card operated parking meters except a minimum contribution of $US5. All donations will go to The Trail Maintenance Endowment Fund. The foundation says it hopes to raise $US1 million to $1.5 million by 2026 for trail maintenance. A foundation official says the endowment currently has just under $US500,000.
