Ever heard of a rain kilt? They are what they sound like, a wet weather kilt for your legs.

But what are they like and are they better than a pair of waterproof pants?

Rain kilts and waterproof pants both protect from rain, but they serve different needs.

Rain kilts are lightweight, breathable and offer better ventilation (There's wind up your skirt!), making them ideal for hiking or backpacking in warm, wet conditions. They’re easy to put on and don’t trap sweat but expose lower legs to splashes.

Waterproof pants provide full coverage, shielding legs entirely from rain, mud, and wind. They're better for colder, harsher environments but can get hot and clammy during exertion. Kilts are ultralight and minimalist, while pants offer comprehensive protection.

And as this video by Robert Hammenrudh shows both have their plus and minuses.
