Have you even had ‘primal panic’ - an intense, fear-based anxiety that occurs when you feel you are under threat - in the case of being outdoors it might be what you feel if were lost or in danger.
What primal panic feels like:
- Physically: A heightened nervous system, a feeling like a knife in the chest, or a sense of adrenaline flooding the body.
- Mentally: Intrusive or spiraling thoughts, constant preoccupation with the partner or relationship, and feeling like an imposter.
- Emotionally: It can feel like a life-or-death emergency, triggering overwhelming terror, pain, confusion, or a "rain cloud" of negative feelings.
There have been a number of stories of bushwalkers getting lost in the bush. The most recent being 23-year-old Hadi Nazari who was missing for two weeks on the Snowy Mountains - fortunately for him he was found alive and well.
Emergency authorities and bush survival experts said they were impressed by Nazari's resilience and strategies for surviving in the bushland.
Being prepared and knowing what to do when lost can be the difference between death and survival, according to such experts.
