Proper cleaning and storage of sleeping bags can significantly extend their lifespan and maintain performance. Here’s how to do it right:

Cleaning
Spot Cleaning: For light dirt or stains, use a damp cloth and mild soap to spot-clean the affected areas. Focus on the hood and collar where body oils accumulate most.

Full Wash: Wash only when necessary. Use a front-loading washing machine with a gentle cycle and cold water. Avoid top-loaders with agitators, which can damage insulation. Use a non-detergent soap designed for down or synthetic materials, depending on your bag’s fill. Always read the instructions on the label usually sewn into the bag

Drying: Dry thoroughly to prevent mildew. Use a large dryer on low heat, adding clean tennis balls or dryer balls to break up clumps of insulation. This may take several hours, especially for down bags.
Avoid Fabric Softeners and Bleach: These can damage the fabric and insulation.

Storing
Don’t Store Compressed: Prolonged compression can damage the insulation’s loft. Avoid keeping the sleeping bag in its stuff sack between uses.

Use a Storage Sack: Store in a large, breathable cotton or mesh sack. If one isn’t provided, a clean pillowcase works well.
Keep It Dry and Cool: Store your bag in a dry, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and moisture. Avoid damp basements or overly hot attics.

Air It Out: After each use, hang or lay out the bag to fully dry before storing. This helps prevent mould and odours.
