You’re standing at the edge of a stream or flooded road. It might not look too deep, but looks can be deceiving. Before you take a step, ask yourself a few critical questions.
Is it too fast? Watch the flow. If the water seems to be rushing faster than a normal walking pace, it's stronger than you think. Fast-moving water can knock you off your feet — even if it’s only ankle deep.
Is it too murky? If the water is brown, cloudy, or muddy, you can’t see the bottom. That means you don’t know how deep it is, where the edges are, or if the ground beneath is stable. One wrong step could trap your foot or send you slipping.
Is it too messy? Look for debris. If the water is carrying branches, trash, or even tree trunks, those objects could hit you, trip you, or hide other hazards below the surface.
Is it too loud? Roaring water and grinding rocks signal dangerous force. That noise isn’t just water — it’s power and destruction.
If you answer YES to any of these questions, don’t cross. Turn back. If in doubt, stay out. Your life is worth more than getting to the other side.
