This will be good! Plans for a continuous 91km trail along Sydney’s waterfront have moved a step closer, with proposals to connect several missing links along the long-envisioned route from the Opera House to Parramatta Park.

The state government has committed $4.5 million to complete key sections in the inner west and to progress the track through 18 suburbs lining Sydney Harbour and the Parramatta River. The investment aims to improve connectivity and make the route more accessible for both residents and visitors.

Transport Minister John Graham said the initiative would build on the success of existing routes such as the inner west GreenWay and the 80km Bondi to Manly walk.

He added that the government is developing the state’s first dedicated walking strategy, designed to guide infrastructure planning while highlighting Sydney’s unique landscape and strong culture of outdoor activity.

Graham noted that Sydney is home to some of the world’s most striking urban walks, appealing equally to locals seeking exercise and tourists keen to experience the city’s scenery. However, he emphasised that better connections between these routes are needed to fully realise their potential.

Currently, around 68km of the route between Woolloomooloo and Parramatta city centre are already accessible via shared pathways. Approximately 23km remain incomplete and will require further planning and construction.

Transport for NSW is collaborating with local councils to deliver short-term improvements to certain sections, while continuing site investigations and longer-term planning for the remaining segments.
