Auswalk CEO, Brett Neagle,

Brett Neagle, Auswalk’s our owner and CEO takes five with Great Walks.

What’s your earliest hiking memory?

My earliest memory was hiking around the Annapurnas at the age of 25. Being my first ever hike, it probably was a bit of a shock. We spent 28 days trekking the Annapurna Circuit, a trek that can now be shortened anywhere from 7 to 10 days by driving almost to the top and flying out from the other side of the pass. In my opinion, that ruins the whole experience because the hardships of the beginning, going through the foothills, that made the rest of it life changing.

How did you get into working in the outdoors?

My start in the outdoor industry was with a corporate outdoor training group in Adelaide. This was run by a friend, Mark. It was a rewarding period where I was paid to climb and hike. Mark sadly died later in his 30s during a descent from the summit of Everest. I continued walking, realising the healing powers of being out on the trail. I also decided to leave technical mountain climbing to the experts. My focus shifted to encourage as many people as I could to just get out and walk.

What’s your role at Auswalk and what does it entail?

My role has changed over the last 15 years, from being one of the guides working in the office, to working on new product, paying the bills etc, and of course dealing with everything that everyone else doesn't want to deal with. As the business has grown, my responsibilities have shifted toward the function of a CEO. However, the thing I enjoy the most is the development of new walking trips. There have been many trails I’ve walked and then designed a trip that are now mainstream products for a large number of people.

What’s your favourite Auswalk tour?

It’s not a fair question as there are so many, and my favourite literally changes with the seasons. Currently it’s the Tour du Mont Blanc, which is insanely beautiful. Next year it will be the new walking trip I’ve just designed around Kyoto. Or there’s Lord Howe Island which is paradise.

What are some of the highlights on this tour?

The scenery, straight out of The Sound of Music, is literally jaw dropping around every corner. On top of that you’re staying in beautiful accommodation, with the best a la carte meals and amazing wine, and across three beautiful countries.

Tell us about the food and accommodation.

Accommodation on the Tour du Mont Blanc consists of comfortable, hand-picked hotels. Most properties are 3-star and 4-star standard with private rooms and ensuite facilities. The food reflects the distinct regional flavours of France, Italy, and Switzerland. Breakfasts are provided daily. Evening meals often consist of two to three courses featuring local specialities such as fondue, tartiflette, or fresh Italian pasta. All giving plenty of energy for the following day’s walk!

What level of fitness would a guest need for this walk?

You need to have a decent level of fitness for this walk. We categorise it as Challenging, with average daily distances of 17km and around 1000m of elevation gain.

What skills would someone need to do a self-guided walk?

No specific technical skills are required beyond the ability to follow the directions provided in our walking notes and digital maps. We provide a dedicated walking app that uses GPS to track your progress. You simply follow the indicated route on the screen. Logistically, we manage all luggage transfers between each accommodation. This allows you to walk on the trail pack-free, carrying only a day pack. That means your focus remains on the walk rather than the logistics.
