The Bibbulmun Track may soon receive heritage listing, as local governments along its length back early investigations by Western Australia’s peak heritage authority.

A nomination submitted late last year to the WA Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage proposes adding the internationally recognised trail to the State Register of Heritage Places.

Stretching roughly 1000km between the Perth Hills and Albany, the Bibbulmun Track is one of Australia’s most demanding long-distance walks, drawing more than 80,000 hikers annually.

The route passes through 18 local government areas, including the Shire of Manjimup, where it connects with towns such as Pemberton, Northcliffe and Walpole.

Shire president Donelle Buegge described the track as central to the identity and vitality of South West communities, noting its presence through well-known local sites including River Road, One Tree Bridge and Beelup Falls. She emphasised both its cultural significance for residents and its strong appeal to visitors.

More than 50 campsites are positioned along the trail, many maintained by the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions, supporting walkers undertaking extended journeys through the region’s forests and coastal landscapes.

A spokesperson for the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage said consultation with local governments marks an initial stage in the heritage assessment process. The Heritage Council has identified priority places for evaluation in coming years, though a full assessment of the Bibbulmun Track has not yet been scheduled.

Any final decision will be guided by stakeholder input and broader community consultation.

Key Implications of Heritage Listing:

  • Legal Protection: Listed places are protected by local, state, or national laws, meaning you cannot usually demolish them and must get approval for renovations.
  • Assessment Process: Alterations are subject to a strict assessment process, which can sometimes result in slower, more expensive development or maintenance work.
  • Recognition and Value: It signifies that the place is a unique part of local or national history, which can affect resale value by increasing demand among buyers looking for unique character.
  • Approval Requirements: Restrictions often cover exteriors, exteriors, and the surrounding setting to preserve the character of the item or area.
