Emergency response capability in the Blue Mountains is set for a major boost with construction beginning on a new $3.3 million NSW State Emergency Service headquarters in Katoomba.

The two-storey facility, located alongside the existing Valley Road building, will become part of the Blue Mountains Emergency Management Precinct, improving coordination and readiness between emergency agencies.

The new headquarters will feature a three-bay garage for specialised SES vehicles and equipment, a dedicated operations and training room, and infrastructure designed to support Bush Search and Rescue operations.

Funding for the project includes $1 million from the NSW Government, $1.1 million from the Australian Government’s Protecting Our Communities Program, and a $1.2 million bequest from local resident Verna Arthur. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.

The investment comes after a demanding year for NSW SES Blue Mountains volunteers, who responded to more than 760 incidents, including 18 search and rescue operations. Members are also participating in a 12-month e-bike trial aimed at improving access to difficult terrain during land searches.

The trial, which supports NSW Police search efforts, is testing how emerging technology can improve response times and safety in remote areas.
