Bookings are open for Queensland’s newest Great Walk, the 32km Ngaro Track, in the the Whitsundays which is set to welcome its first hikers in May next year.
The Ngaro Track links two of the region’s most celebrated locations. It begins at the world renowned Whitehaven Beach, known for its soft white silica sand and brilliant turquoise water, before guiding walkers inland towards the striking vistas of Hill Inlet.
Along the way, the route meanders through a diverse range of landscapes, including quiet mangrove systems, shaded forest sections, and rugged rocky features. The trail also leads hikers to the summit of Whitsunday Craig, one of the highest points on the island, where sweeping views reward the climb.
Across the three day journey, walkers stay for two nights at purpose built campgrounds positioned to highlight the island’s natural environment. These sites include raised tent platforms, communal shelters for cooking and relaxing, and thoughtfully placed toilets that offer truly memorable loo with a view moments.
To protect the fragile environment and preserve a sense of solitude, access is capped at fifteen hikers per day and the trail is closed to day visitors. The ideal walking season runs from April to October, when temperatures are cooler. Walkers must be fully self sufficient and arrange transfers to and from Whitsunday Island in advance.
Highlights of the Ngaro track include:
