The body of a bushwalker has been recovered in south west Tasmania after being discovered by another person hiking in the area.

Authorities were alerted early Monday morning (Nov 24) when the man was found near Federation Peak shortly before ten o clock. Emergency services dispatched the Westpac Rescue Helicopter to the remote location, and the body of the man, who has since been identified as a thirty nine year old from New South Wales, was retrieved early in the afternoon. His name has not been made public.

Police reported that the man had been expected to return from his walk around Federation Peak on Sunday. When he did not arrive as arranged, his friends contacted authorities today to raise their concerns. Officers have stated that the circumstances surrounding the death are not considered suspicious. A formal report will be prepared for the coroner to determine the cause of death.

Federation Peak rises to a height of 1225m and is regarded as a significant destination for experienced bushwalkers and climbers. It forms part of the Eastern Arthur Range Traverse, a challenging route known for its dramatic scenery and demanding conditions.

According to Tasmania’s Parks and Wildlife Service, the peak is an imposing quartzite mountain with steep faces and sharp, rugged edges, making it a notable but difficult objective for those drawn to the region’s wild landscapes.
