Repairs are underway across more than 46km of fire-damaged walking tracks in Morton and Budawang National Parks, including the much-loved Castle Walking Track.
The work forms part of a major restoration effort following the devastating 2019–2020 bushfires.
To allow for essential upgrades, the Castle Walking Track in Morton National Park will be closed from 1 September 2025 until 30 April 2026. The closure will also affect several nearby areas: the Castle Walking Track and car park, Cooyoyo Campgrounds, Long Gully Campgrounds and Picnic Area, and Byangee Walls Walking Track.
While Long Gully Campgrounds and Byangee Walls are not directly part of the upgrade, they will stay closed during construction to keep visitors safe within the broader project area.
The works will focus on restoring the track’s natural character while improving safety and resilience. Crews will replace damaged infrastructure with similar materials, enhance drainage systems, and install measures to manage erosion and sediment. These improvements aim to ensure the walking track remains sustainable and accessible for years to come.
Once complete, visitors can look forward to a refreshed and safer experience along one of the region’s most spectacular bushwalking routes, surrounded by the striking cliffs, forests, and wilderness that make the Castle such a treasured part of the national park.
