How’s this for a calf killer. Just outside of Vancouver, Canada, the Grouse Grind a leg-burning rite of passage on Grouse Mountain - and it’s just officially opened for the season.
This 2.9km trail climbs nearly 850 metres through dense forest, packing in roughly 2,800 uneven steps that seem to multiply the higher you go! It’s not a scenic stroll—it’s a steady, relentless grind that quickly turns lungs to bellows and legs to jelly.
From the first stretch, your calves clock in for serious overtime, tightening and firing with every upward push. By the halfway marker, they’re sending polite complaints. Near the top, they’ve lodged a full protest. Throw in the occasional wooden stair, rooty scramble and narrow switchback, and you’ve got a workout that doesn’t let up.
But there’s a strange joy in the suffering. Fellow hikers puff encouragement, small victories come with each section conquered, and the forest air keeps things fresh. When you finally emerge at the summit, legs trembling and shirt soaked, there’s a real sense you’ve earned the view—and perhaps a well-deserved ride down.
