Unfortuntely this is a story we hear too often. Celine Cremer was a 31-year-old Belgian backpacker who went missing in the Tasmanian bush in June 2023.
She was last seen near Philosopher Falls, a remote rainforest track near the town of Waratah, where she had set out alone on what was expected to be a short bushwalk.
When she failed to return, friends reported her missing about nine days later, and her car was found parked at the trailhead. Extensive searches by police and volunteers were carried out in difficult terrain and harsh winter conditions, but no trace of her was initially found.
The case remained a mystery for over two years until new evidence began to emerge in late 2025, including her phone and personal items. In early 2026, human remains and belongings were discovered in nearby bushland and along the Arthur River, believed to be hers.
Her disappearance highlights the dangers of remote wilderness areas and the challenges of search efforts in rugged environments.
In tis ABC TV show, reporter retrace Celine Cremer and focus on the rescue to find her and eventually to recover her body.
Celine’s story is a rememder that evertime you set foot in the bush you need to do important things - Perpare and Communicate.
