The iconic Mueller Hut in Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park has recently undergone a significant refurbishment—no small task given its remote alpine location.

Perched at 1,850 metres, the hut overlooks New Zealand’s highest peak, Aoraki/Mount Cook in the South Island. It was officially opened by Sir Edmund Hillary in 2003 and has since served as a popular destination for experienced trampers.

Contractors working for the Department of Conservation have completed extensive upgrades, including the installation of new windows and doors, replacement of both interior and exterior cladding, and the addition of new water tanks.

All of this work was carried out in harsh alpine conditions.

Project lead Rob Stewart described the undertaking as exceptionally demanding, with gale-force winds and snow creating constant challenges.

Materials and personnel had to be transported via helicopter, with sixteen loads of supplies and ten loads of workers—including gasfitters, plumbers, painters and builders—flown to the site. It marks the most substantial maintenance project on the hut in over two decades.

Inside, the team also refreshed the space by sanding, painting and polishing surfaces, including tables and bench seating.

Efforts were made to maximise the opportunity, given the difficulty of access, with upgrades to the gas system, water storage and structural reinforcements to ensure longevity.

The Mueller Hut Route itself is considered one of the more demanding alpine walks in the region. Spanning 11.8 kilometres return, it involves an ascent of approximately 1,000 metres over the Sealy Range.

The climb begins immediately with steep steps and continues through exposed terrain where weather can shift rapidly. However, those who complete the journey are rewarded with sweeping views of glaciers, alpine lakes and the surrounding Southern Alps, making it a challenging yet unforgettable experience.
