There’s more to Lord Howe Island than its remote beauty — it now boasts the world’s most visually stunning airport runway.

A recent study by travel insurance provider AllClear used eye-tracking software to discover which runways around the globe captured attention fastest — and Lord Howe came out on top.

Just 886 metres long, the island’s airstrip may be modest in size, but the views are anything but. Cradled between emerald peaks and the brilliant turquoise waters of the Tasman Sea, the runway sits on an 11km-long island located 700km from both Sydney and Brisbane. Unsurprisingly, it held viewers’ gaze the longest of any runway in the study.

But it’s what lies beyond the landing strip that truly takes your breath away. Lord Howe Island is a walker’s paradise, with world-class trails winding through ancient rainforests, up dramatic volcanic peaks, and along untouched coastlines.

Our good friends at Pinetrees Lodge are the perfect hosts to show you the best of it.

From guided walks to gourmet picnics on secluded beaches, they offer the ultimate island escape. With warm hospitality, beautiful accommodation, exceptional food, and the ideal location on the lagoon, Pinetrees will make sure your stay is unforgettable. Come for the trails — stay for the experience.

Seven Peaks Walk
Pinetrees' Seven Peaks Walk is Lord Howe’s premier five day guided adventure that takes you from pristine beaches and exposed coral platforms to the gnarled forests on Mt Lidgbird. Along the way, you’ll see sheltered swimming coves, subtropical palm forests, freshwater creeks, rugged sea cliffs and volcanic peaks.

Other sections of the walk take you deep into Jurassic Park style banyan forests with the only rookeries of Providence petrels in the world. When you yell, the curious birds land at your feet, almost hypnotised. It’s an incredible experience.
