It’s not often a feature film comes along where hiking plays such a central role in the story, which makes the arrival of The North especially exciting.
Written and directed by Bart Schrijver, the film follows former best friends Chris and Lluis as they reunite after a decade apart to tackle Scotland’s legendary West Highland Way and the remote Cape Wrath Trail. Having completed the same 530km journey together in their younger years, the pair hope that 30 days trekking through the rugged Scottish Highlands might help rebuild their fractured friendship.
But as the kilometres pass beneath their boots, old tensions begin to surface. Differences in priorities, unresolved emotions and the relentless physical demands of the trail slowly test the pair’s bond, turning the journey into something far more personal than either expected.
Shot entirely on location along the actual hiking route — and filmed in chronological order — The North captures the wild beauty, isolation and emotional honesty that long-distance walking can bring. More than just a hiking film, it’s a thoughtful exploration of friendship, solitude and the quiet challenges that emerge when two people spend weeks walking side by side through vast, unforgiving landscapes.
