Mount Coolum National Park, a popular hiking destination on the Sunshine Coast attracting over 200,000 visitors annually, is set to receive a much-needed upgrade.
Construction of a new public amenities block at the base of the mountain is scheduled to begin in August, with completion expected by November.
Currently, the nearest public toilets are located nearly 2km away in Birrahl Park. The new facility will provide accessible and modern amenities for hikers and visitors, enhancing the overall experience at this beloved natural landmark.
The $475,000 project is a collaborative effort between the Sunshine Coast Council and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
Minister for the Environment and Tourism, Andrew Powell, expressed his support for the initiative, highlighting the Queensland Government's commitment to improving facilities in national parks to ensure visitors can enjoy the landscapes comfortably.
Sunshine Coast Councillor Taylor Bunnag emphasized the importance of maintaining and improving parks and recreational spaces across the region. He noted that the new amenities block would significantly benefit both residents and visitors by providing essential facilities closer to the trailhead.
This development follows an initial funding commitment made by the previous state government in August 2024, with continued support from the current administration.
