The Queensland Government has committed $3.5 million to upgrade four regional rail trails across the state, aiming to boost ecotourism and support local communities.

This investment aligns with the government’s Destination 2045 strategy, which focuses on enhancing Queensland’s ecotourism offerings and driving regional growth.

Under the Department of Transport and Main Roads’ Rail Trail Program, the funding will be distributed as follows: $75,000 for the Pioneer Valley Rail Trail, $1.6 million for the Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail, $147,000 for the Bundaberg to Gin Gin Rail Trail, and $1.6 million for the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail.

Transport and Main Roads Minister Brent Mickelberg said the program is designed to increase tourism and stimulate regional economies.

“Cycle tourism is on the rise, and rail trails are essential for bringing economic benefits to rural towns,” he said.

“This funding helps breathe new life into old infrastructure, fosters connections with nature, and opens up opportunities for communities to thrive.”

Boyne Burnett Inland Rail Trail Inc. President Merryn King welcomed the announcement.

“This funding will significantly enhance 14 kilometres of trail surface and improve safety across three bridges in North Burnett and two in the Boyne Valley,” she said.

“Ongoing support from volunteers and local groups will help establish this trail as a leading tourist destination in the Gladstone and North Burnett regions.”
