Swiss boffins have unveiled an innovative and environmentally conscious alternative to single use plastic bottles in the form of edible water capsules created from seaweed extract.
These capsules represent a promising development in the global effort to reduce plastic waste, which continues to accumulate in landfills and oceans despite increasing awareness of the problem.
The capsules are small, smooth and jelly like, roughly the size of a cherry tomato, and are designed to be swallowed whole. Once consumed, they leave behind absolutely no packaging waste, offering a convenient and guilt free way to stay hydrated.
Their delicate membrane is made from natural seaweed components, which means it is entirely vegan, flavourless and fully biodegradable. This makes the capsules suitable for a wide range of users, including those who follow plant based diets or who have concerns about synthetic materials entering the environment.
Trials have already taken place at running events, music festivals and other large public gatherings, where traditional plastic bottles are often used in great numbers. The capsules proved easy to distribute and popular with participants, demonstrating their potential to replace millions of single use containers.
If adopted on a wider scale, this invention could significantly reduce pollution while encouraging new habits around hydration and responsible consumption.
