Now here’s a good news story.

From South Downs National Park (90min, south-west of London), a beautiful tapestry of traditional hedgerows stretches far into the distance, creating a living landscape that feels almost endless.

This remarkable “mega hedge” runs right across Hampshire, linking to New Forest National Park over an impressive 25km.

Known as the Hampshire Hedge, this inspiring project has taken three years to complete, bringing together skilled hedge layers and passionate volunteers. Their shared vision has created an unbroken green corridor, reconnecting two national parks and the wildlife that depends on them.

More than just boundaries, hedgerows are thriving ecosystems. Even in their narrow form, they act as vital wildlife corridors, supporting around 2,000 species throughout the year.

From tiny insects to birds, mice and hedgehogs, these natural pathways provide food, shelter and safe passage across the countryside.

The project, led by Campaign to Protect Rural England through its Hedgerow Heroes programme, has also received support from conservation groups and the National Lottery Heritage Fund.

As local councillor Alison Johnston highlights, these hedgerows are essential for wildlife, climate resilience and keeping the countryside vibrant and full of life.
