An American woman has set herself the unusual challenge of attempting a hiking record while wearing high heels.
Erin Ton, (27) has already climbed 24 of Colorado’s 58 peaks in three-inch sandals (7.6cm) and she intends to complete the remaining summits as well. What began as a light hearted joke with friends quickly turned into a personal mission to show that it is possible to be both feminine and adventurous at the same time.
Her first major ascent was Mount Elbert in 2018, an experience that sparked her passion for climbing the states famous fourteen thousand foot peaks. By 2023 she had come close to achieving an impressive record by completing fifty seven summits in just two weeks.
Her decision to return to the mountains in heels started in 2020 as a tribute to that first climb and soon developed into a signature challenge that captured public attention.
Although she has faced criticism from some who question the practicality or safety of her approach, Ton remains determined. She hopes her efforts will inspire more women to explore the outdoors in ways that feel authentic to them, proving that an interest in nature and a love of style do not have to be mutually exclusive.
From inexpensive heels bought at a local shop to a custom made Italian pair, she has tackled even the most difficult routes, including the demanding Capitol Peak. It is undeniably tough on her feet, yet she believes the effort is strengthening her ankles as well as her resolve. Erin Ton shows that adventure and elegance can truly coexist.
