Sue Black, Little Red Flying Foxes of Nitmiluk (PLACES WILDERNESS)

At the beginning of the Jatbula Trail in the Northern Territory, thousands of little red flying foxes roost amongst the trees. It is estimated that between 40,000 to 50,000 live in Nitmiluk National Park. Bats are one of the most important pollinators of Australian forests and their presence is critical. Little Red Flying-foxes are important pollinators of tree species and fly further into inland Australia than other bat species, following the flowering of eucalypts. It was an awe inspiring experience watching these bats fly off in the morning.
