Susan Woods, Tongariro National Park Alpine Crossing (PLACES WILDERNESS)

The Tongariro National Park Apline Crossing is a 19.4 km height wilderness walk that takes about 6-8 hrs to cross. The hike takes you up through volcanic lava fields, and calderas which up toward Mt Ruapheu. At the time I walked on this perfect day you could see the smoke coming off the volcano in the distance. The pathway made for much anticipation for the climb and views ahead which included walking across snowfields. Perfect day!
