Ski mountaineer Andrzej Bargiel has become the first person to climb Mount Everest and ski back to Base Camp without the use of supplementary oxygen.
After spending nearly 16 hours ascending through the high-altitude “death zone” — the perilous region above 8,000 metres where oxygen levels are critically low — Bargiel stepped into his skis on the summit of the world’s highest peak and began his descent along the South Col Route.
He reached Camp II later that evening and paused to rest; progress over the summit ridge and the Hillary Step had taken longer than expected, and the onset of darkness made continuing unsafe. At first light the following morning, he tackled the notoriously dangerous Khumbu Icefall, this time guided by a drone piloted by his brother, Bartek.
Bargiel arrived safely at Base Camp, completing the first full ascent and ski descent of Everest without any additional oxygen support.
