The St James Walkway is a 65km walk route through the remote high country of the South Island, managed by the Department of Conservation (DOC).

Typically completed in 3–5 days, it traverses the St James Conservation Area, crossing open tussock plains, beech forest and braided river valleys.

Bushwalkers pass historic homesteads and huts, including Anne Hut and Boyle Flat Hut, with basic facilities. The track is well-marked but can be exposed to harsh weather, especially in winter. It’s a classic backcountry experience, offering solitude, wide landscapes and a strong sense of New Zealand’s pastoral history.
