One guide tells all

Life’s An Adventure guide Carla Pettitt tells us why she loves guiding on the Larapinta Trail pack-free guided walk and why every Australian needs to explore the Red Centre on foot.

What’s your favourite part of the Larapinta Trail pack-free guided walk?

The Larapinta Trail pack-free guided walk focuses on the highlights of the Larapinta Trail. So instead of doing the whole 230km, we explore the best parts of the trail. The logistics are taken care of, so that you can focus on the walk itself. With ‘pack-free walking’ you can really immerse yourself into the experience.

Instead of carrying a heavy overnight pack, you only need a daypack, leaving you free to enjoy the amazing scenery, spot wildlife, chat with your guide, take in stories and learn about the incredible plants and geology of the area. One of my favourite days is walking section 8 (Counts Point), the views along this walking trail are truly magnificent.

Why should every Aussie experience the Larapinta Trail?

It is located  in the arid desert of Central Australia on the West MacDonnell Ranges. The colours will blow you away, especially with the amazing display of wildflowers during the cooler months. It’s home to over 600 species of rare desert plants, plants that you will not see anywhere else in the world. People do not expect to see so many of them.

The Larapinta trail is one of the most ancient landscapes in the world. You walk through terrain shaped 800 million years ago, it’s a geologist’s playground with so many colourful rocks in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Featuring dramatic red quartzite gorges, rugged mountain peaks and permanent waterholes, it’s definitely is not what you would expect in the centre of Australia.

What’s so unique about exploring the Red Centre on foot?

It’s a great opportunity to slow down, disconnect from the busyness of everyday life and reconnect with nature. For me, one of my greatest joys is helping people notice the small details that are so often overlooked – the calls of native birds, tiny insects, animal tracks, unique rock formations, wildflowers, native plants and the different ecosystems that shape each landscape.

Hiking in the Red Centre encourages us to engage all our senses. We listen to the sounds of the bush, breathe in the fresh air, feel different textures beneath our feet, and take in the beauty that surrounds us. It’s an immersive experience that helps people feel truly present.

What makes guiding the Larapinta so special for you?

Larapinta isn’t simply a walking trail – it’s a place of connection, wonder and respect. It’s somewhere I return to not only because of its extraordinary beauty but because it inspires me to help others fall in love with nature and understand why these wild places are worth protecting. Every trip feels different, yet every trip leaves me feeling grounded, inspired and grateful. I love sharing these moments with others. Watching people notice the details, ask questions and connect with the landscape is one of the most rewarding parts of guiding.
