As the cost of staying fit continues to rise, more Australians are discovering that one of the best workouts might be right outside the front door.

Bushwalking, walking and running are proving popular alternatives to expensive gyms and fitness classes, giving people a chance to stay active while enjoying the outdoors.

New research from sports equipment retailer Net World Sports found that switching to free exercise was the most common way Australians had reduced their fitness spending over the past year. Rather than giving up exercise, many are choosing activities that cost little or nothing – with bushwalking an obvious winner.

Bushwalking is already one of Australia’s most popular ways to stay active, ranking second only to recreational walking in the research. And unlike a gym membership, heading out on a trail doesn’t come with a monthly fee. From an easy stroll through the local bush to a challenging weekend hike, there are options to suit almost every fitness level.

The shift towards outdoor exercise is particularly noticeable among Australians aged 45-54, who are the most likely age group to swap paid fitness activities for free alternatives such as running, outdoor training and home workouts.

Younger Australians are also looking for ways to save, with many choosing to downgrade or switch gym memberships rather than abandon exercise altogether.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway is that getting fit doesn’t have to be expensive. Australia has an incredible network of parks, reserves and walking trails, offering a free gym with some pretty spectacular scenery thrown in. All you need is a pair of walking shoes and a trail to explore. Right, off you go!
