Direct Newcastle–Hobart flights return

Opening up Tasmania’s walking trails

Great Walks 28.10.2026

Good news for Newcastle bushwalkers: direct flights between Newcastle and Hobart have returned, making it easier to explore Tasmania’s spectacular walking trails without the hassle of travelling to Sydney Airport first.

The Jetstar service will operate three times a week until 24 April 2027, with flights on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The two-hour journey offers Hunter walkers a convenient gateway to Tasmania’s wilderness, from alpine landscapes and rugged coastlines to ancient forests and mountain tracks.

Tasmania is a bushwalker’s paradise, with famous routes including the Overland Track, the Three Capes Track and the trails of Freycinet National Park. The island also offers plenty of shorter day walks, making it an appealing destination for everyone from weekend explorers to experienced trekkers planning a multi-day adventure.

This year’s extended flight season will deliver 156 flights and 28,872 seats, an increase of 34 flights and almost 6,300 seats compared with last season. The extra capacity will make it easier for Hunter residents to plan walking holidays across spring, summer and Easter.

Newcastle Airport CEO Linc Horton said the return of the service provided greater choice and connectivity for the region.

“It’s great to have Hobart back on the departures board and even better to see the season extended this year,” Mr Horton said.

“For people across the Hunter, it means you can leave Newcastle and be in Hobart in around two hours, ready to enjoy everything Tasmania has to offer without travelling to Sydney first.”

Flights depart Newcastle at 3.40pm on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, arriving in Hobart at 5.40pm. Return services leave Hobart at 6.20pm.
