With Christopher Nolan’s forthcoming film The Odyssey set to rekindle interest in ancient Greek legends, travellers can now step into the world of heroes and myths on an epic adventure of their own.

Greece has launched the Peloponnese Trail, a new long-distance hiking network that threads its way across the country’s southern peninsula in time for Europe’s summer walking season.

Stretching for more than 1,700km, the Peloponnese Mythic Trail Network links 12 established walking routes through spectacular coastlines, mountain ranges, olive groves and historic villages.

The ambitious project began in 2015 with the creation of Arcadia’s Menalon Trail and has since restored forgotten mule tracks, improved signage and introduced comprehensive digital mapping.

Each trail is named after a legendary figure from Greek mythology or history, connecting walkers with landscapes that inspired Homer’s epics.

Highlights include the 203km Hercules Trail, which passes through the vineyards of Nemea, where mythology says Hercules defeated the fearsome Nemean Lion, before continuing to the Temple of Zeus and the ancient ruins of Mycenae.

The Messinia Trail explores the homeland of King Nestor, while the Sparta Trail leads to the Tomb of Leonidas, passing evocative ruins that recall the glory of ancient Greece.

Timed perfectly with renewed interest in The Odyssey, the network offers a chance to experience the myths that have captivated the world for thousands of years. And if you do walk this trail make sure you tell us!
