The Great Walks Oct–Nov issue is here! It’s our Tasmania special, perfect for anyone planning a trip to the Apple Isle for the summer walking season.

In his editor’s letter, Brent McKean looks back on his first Tasmanian holiday, when he tackled the Overland Track – and discovered that the island’s famously unpredictable weather was ready to put him to the test.

“After a quick safety briefing from a Tas Parks ranger I hit the trail and it immediately poured down. It was almost as if the gods were waiting for me to put one foot on the track.”

Thankfully, Tasmania soon changed its tune.

“The following morning after a big night’s sleep in Waterfall Valley Hut I was greeted with a sunny, windless day. It’s like the weather in Tasmania likes to play Good Cop/Bad Cop just to keep you guessing!”

There are plenty more Tasmanian adventures inside, including walks on Maria Island, in Hartz Mountains National Park and through the Tarkine Wilderness. One bushwalker also shares the story of his DIY north–south traverse of Tasmania – an epic journey that came with more than its fair share of challenges.

“There are the places where you learn to walk sideways in the wind, to try to distinguish the river from the path, but above all to accept that the two might merge, for the sake of confusion,” writes Laurent Boiveau.

Back on the mainland, we explore Queensland’s Scenic Rim and the Red Centre’s mighty Larapinta Trail. And speaking of which, our latest competition prize is an incredible pack-free Larapinta Trail walking holiday for two people.

Overseas, we head to Croatia to explore its latest pilgrim route, the Camino Dubrovnik–Međugorje, which combines spectacular Adriatic scenery with modern brutalist architecture.

In our Walksmart section, we review some of the best portable camping stoves on the market and share tips for getting the most from macro photography – perfect if you’re planning to enter the Nature category of our Wilderness Photographer of the Year competition.
