One of Perth’s best walks reopens for six weeks only

Locals and visitors are being urged to get in quick to experience one of Perth’s best walking trails, with Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary’s Possum Loop reopening for a limited six-week season this spring.

Located on Noongar Country, the 2.3km loop has reopened following a 12-month closure after flood-related damage. The Australian Wildlife Conservancy (AWC), which manages the sanctuary, has completed extensive restoration work ahead of the reopening.

Just one hour from Perth, the Possum Loop takes around one to two hours to complete and is rated a Class 3 moderate walk. The trail winds through woodland, seasonal wildflowers, creeks and waterfalls, with spectacular views across the Avon Valley.

“Getting your steps in has never been more scenic,” said Clint McGee, AWC Sanctuary Manager at Paruna Wildlife Sanctuary. “The Possum Loop showcases some of the Perth Hills’ most beautiful bushland and Avon Valley vistas.”

The sanctuary protects a diverse range of habitats and is home to around 400 plant species. It has also played an important role in mammal reintroduction projects, including the return of the Tammar wallaby. Visitors may even spot one bounding through the bush.

Walkers must book online in advance, with an $11 entry fee helping fund trail maintenance and AWC’s conservation work.
