The Great Walks August–September is out now!

The edition celebrates our Colours of Australia theme, showcasing some of the country’s most spectacular walking destinations. Highlights include the Gold Coast Hinterland Walk, the best day walks in the Red Centre, the lush landscapes of Queensland’s Daintree National Park, and the rugged beauty of the Victorian High Country.

For those looking to explore beyond traditional hiking, we also try our hand at bike-hiking in the NSW Snowy Mountains. Combining cycling with bushwalking, it’s an exciting way to cover longer distances, reach remote trailheads more quickly, and experience the landscape from a fresh perspective.

This issue is also our Camino special, featuring some of the world’s most rewarding pilgrimage routes. We explore iconic Caminos across France and Spain, along with inspiring pilgrim walks in other parts of the world.

To help readers prepare for their own adventure, six Australian pilgrims share the lessons they learned on the trail.

“One of the most remarkable parts of the Camino is the connections you make with people you would never normally meet. These aren’t surface-level conversations either, they can become deeply personal and emotional very quickly,” says Vicki Gabriel (59) of Mount Gambier, SA, one of the Australians we interviewed.

“I’ve shared conversations with people from all over the world and been struck by the honesty and vulnerability shown by both men and women. Discussions about love, loss, regrets and family seem to unfold naturally on the trail.”

“At the same time,” she says, “the Camino has a way of stirring your own thoughts. Sometimes I find myself revisiting memories and emotions I’ve spent years pushing into the ‘never to be opened’ drawer. Some days that drawer feels enormous, other days it barely registers, but walking has a way of reminding you that eventually it needs to be unpacked.”
