Thank you to everyone who entered Wilderness Photographer of the Year 2022. You can see the Winners, Runners-Up and Top 10 entries in both categories here. The Top 10 in each category were also published in the Feb-Mar 2022 issue of Great Walks magazine. The competition will open for entries again in April 2023.

ABOUT WILDERNESS PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR 

Now in its second year, Great Walks' Wilderness Photographer of the Year, presented by Southern Ocean Walk,  is looking for inspiring images of the great outdoors.

The competition is open to Australian and New Zealand Photographers and is designed as a showcase the planet's precious wilderness areas, both here and abroad.

The best images, including winners, runners-up and the Top 10 in each category will be featured in the February-March 2023 issue of Great Walks magazine, and on www.greatwalks.com.au.

Winners and runners-up will share in a major prize pool including luxury guided walks from Southern Ocean Walk and Life's An Adventure plus GME personal locator beacons and $5,000 cash. Also each will receive a Great Walks annual subscription. For all prize info click here.

WHO CAN ENTER?

Wilderness Photographer of the Year is open to Australian and New Zealand citizens and residents. A resident is defined as a person who has lived in Australia or New Zealand for at least six months at the time of entering this competition.

IMAGE REQUIREMENTS

Your image should be saved as a JPEG or PNG and be at least 2,500 pixels on the longest edge. The overall file size must be less than 5MB. 

Please note: Please avoid using non-standard characters in the image filename (for example [, ], @, ", ', #, $, %, ^, &, *, (, ), ©). These characters may result in the image not uploading properly. Hyphens (-) and underscores (_) are fine. If you find that one or more of your images has not uploaded correctly, email us at photocomp@greatwalks.com.au and we can help you out.

Do not add watermarks, branding or text to your images.

WHAT IS WILDERNESS?

For this competition we've defined wilderness as a natural environment that has not been significantly modified by human activity. However, images that show the effects of human impact on the environment may be entered in the competition, in the context of illustrating the fragility or resilience of the natural world.

CATEGORIES

There are two categories in Wilderness Photographer of the Year, Places and People. The People category is for shots of the wilderness that include people in the frame, Places is for images that do not include people in the frame. STANDARD
$20 per entry (27 June to 2 October 2022)

LAST MINUTE
$25 (3 October to 23 October 2022)

DEADLINES

Entries close Sunday 23 October 2022 (11:59pm, AEDT).

IMAGE EDITING

In post-production you can adjust 'photographic' variables such as exposure, contrast, colour, noise and sharpness. Lens and perspective corrections, cropping and black-and-white conversions are also allowed.

Composite images are not allowed, with the exception of stitched panoramas, focus stacks and HDR images (where the camera captures several exposures from the same tripod location and those exposures are merged to form a single image). Cloning to remove distractions or add new elements to your image is not allowed. 

Competition organisers reserve the right to disqualify an image if they feel it lacks authenticity due to over-manipulation.

JUDGES

Great Walks' Wilderness Photographer of the Year will be judged by leading outdoor and wilderness photographers Ryan Domenico, Stephanie Vella, Mike Edmonson and Julie Fletcher. Find out more about the judges here.

PRIZES

Winners and runners up will share in a  prize pool, including $5,000 cash. Prizes include a luxury guided walks with Southern Ocean Walk and Life's An Adventure, plus GME personal locator beacons and subscrptions to Great Walks.

RECOGNITION

Winners and runners-up will be revealed in Great Walks magazine (February-March 2023 issue), as well as on greatwalks.com.au and Great Walks' Facebook page.

Top 10 images in each category will also be showcased in Great Walks magazine (February-March 2023 2023 issue) along with a selection of judges' comments.

Also in February, Winners, Runners-up, Top 10, Top 20, Highly Commended, and Commended photographers will be notified via email with a certificate confirming their placing in the competition.
