How to… capture more with your phone camera

The best camera is often the one already in your pocket.

Modern smartphones are capable of producing stunning landscape, wildlife and trail photos, but great images rely on technique rather than technology alone. Whether you’re hiking through alpine scenery or exploring your local bushland, these 10 simple tips will help you take sharper, more creative and memorable photos with your phone.

Use natural light
Early morning and late afternoon provide warm, flattering light with softer shadows. Avoid harsh midday sun where possible.

Follow the rule of thirds
Turn on your phone’s grid and position key subjects along the grid lines or intersections for more balanced compositions.

Get closer
Rather than relying on digital zoom, move closer to your subject. You’ll capture more detail and maintain better image quality.

Use HDR wisely
High Dynamic Range helps balance bright skies and dark foregrounds, making it ideal for landscapes with strong contrast.

Look for leading lines
Tracks, boardwalks, rivers and fences naturally guide the viewer’s eye through an image and add depth.

Change your perspective
Crouch low, climb a little higher or shoot from an unexpected angle to create more dynamic and engaging compositions.

Clean the lens
Wipe your camera lens with a soft cloth before shooting. Dust, fingerprints and moisture can make photos appear soft or hazy.

Keep the phone steady
Hold your phone with both hands, brace against a tree or rock, or use a small tripod to reduce camera shake.

Tap to focus
Tap the main subject on your screen before taking the photo. Many phones also let you adjust exposure by sliding your finger up or down.

Edit with a light touch
A few small adjustments to brightness, contrast, colour and cropping can dramatically improve a photo without making it look unnatural.
