A brand-new long-distance hiking route is giving walkers the chance to cross the heart of Europe on one truly epic adventure.

Stretching almost 3500km from Poland’s Baltic coast to Italy’s Adriatic shoreline, the newly launched Wolf Trail aims to bring the North American tradition of end-to-end thru-hiking to Europe.

Winding through six countries, the route links dense forests, alpine peaks, picturesque villages and some of Central Europe’s most overlooked landscapes.

Thru-hiking, which originated in North America, involves walking the entire length of a long-distance trail in one continuous journey, often taking several months. It is best known through iconic routes such as the Appalachian Trail and the Pacific Crest Trail. The Wolf Trail hopes to establish a similar challenge in Europe.

The route passes through Poland, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Italy and Slovenia, giving hikers the flexibility to tackle individual sections or commit to the full journey.

Those completing the entire trail will cover almost 3500km and climb more than 78000m of elevation while exploring regions rarely included on traditional European travel itineraries.

The Wolf Trail is divided into seven distinct stages.

The Baltic Start follows sandy beaches and coastal forests for 430km. Rivers & Plains covers 530km through the Mecklenburg coast and Elbe Valley, while The Green Heart traverses 480km of heathland and rolling countryside. Forests & Wine winds 572km through the Rothaar Mountains and Germany’s famous wine regions. High Watch crosses the Black Forest over 573km before Alpine Gateway enters the Allgäu Alps for 373km.

The final stage, Alpine Crossing, spans 591km through the spectacular Dolomites and Julian Alps before finishing in the Italian port city of Trieste.
